Uncork Texas Wines is pleased to announce the 2021 Texas Vintners Cup competition, the first Texas wine evaluation of its kind with the goal of selecting twelve of the “Best in Texas” bottles of Texas wine.

With Texas Monthly Studio as our partner, and prominent Texas wine writer and sommelier Jessica Dupuy as one of three judges, the Texas Vintners Cup competition will determine the ultimate case of Texas wine. Twelve individual bottles of Texas wines will complete a single case, reflecting the very best our state offers.

In addition to Mrs. Dupuy, additional judges will be Master Sommeliers Jack Mason and James Tidwell. A resident of Houston, Mr. Mason is the Texas to state portfolio manager at Republic National Distributing Company (RNDC). He previously managed the beverage programs at Pappas Bros. Steakhouse as well as Marta in New York City. He has been featured in Forbes’ annual “30 Under 30” list of outstanding young professionals. Mr. Tidwell, based in Dallas, is the owner and co-founder of the TEXSOM Conference, an international conference for wine professionals. He is also the owner and producer of the TEXSOM International Wine Awards and a consulting sommelier with Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts in Las Colinas. Under his leadership, the resort’s restaurant earned a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence and was nominated five times for a James Beard Foundation Award for Outstanding Beverage Program.

Each entry will be tasted in a blind format, with each bottle wrapped to hide the labels and poured by volunteers. Each wine will be evaluated based on standard tasting criteria with five possible points per category of aroma, palate, structure, balance, and finish for a possible total score of 25.

The winning Texas vintners and their wines will be profiled in a special section in Texas Monthly’s October 2021 issue, as we celebrate Texas Wine Month, highlighting the many exciting changes to our industry and to Texas wine.

Texas Monthly
readers will have the opportunity to enter a sweepstakes with winners receiving gift cards to the winning Texas wineries.

ENTRY DETAILS

The 2021 Texas Vintners Cup will only evaluate wines with a Texas Appellation or with a designated American Viticultural Area (AVA). These wines must contain a minimum of 75 percent Texas-grown grapes. Wines submitted without the Texas Appellation or an official AVA designation will not be evaluated.

The evaluation will include Red, White, and Rosé wines.

Please limit your submission to a total of six (6) wine selections. You may, of course, submit fewer wines based on your preference.

In the event of a faulted bottle of wine, we ask that you include two bottle
samples per wine selection.

We welcome and encourage wines that are available to the general public as well as club and special-release wines. The goal of this project is to show some of the best wines in Texas.

All submissions must be received at the address below no later than Friday, June 4, 2021.

Please email labels, technical sheets/winemaker’s tasting notes, and/or bottle shots for the wines you submit in .pdf or .jpg format to jessica@jessicadupuy.com.

If you have any questions about submitting wines, please feel free to contact Jessica Dupuy at the email address above.
